Overview

Fort Myers Beach is the town on Estero Island, a barrier island with seven miles of white sand beach along the Gulf. The Town describes the water as sloping gently out, with “no sudden drop-offs or big waves.”¹ Estero Boulevard is the only through road on the island, and all public beach accesses come off it.¹

The island is still rebuilding after Hurricane Ian (September 2022). Lee County started restoration projects at its beach parks in 2026, and some of the best-known parking lots are closed as a result.² Check the Parking section before you drive out.

Getting there from San Carlos Park

  • Driving distance: about 15.8 miles, roughly 30 minutes from San Carlos Park (33967) to the Fort Myers Beach town centroid. That’s the OSRM public router’s estimate with no traffic, run 2026-10-23. Season and weekend traffic on San Carlos Boulevard and the Matanzas Pass bridge can add a lot of time.
  • Straight-line: 8.4 miles (OpenStreetMap centroids).

Beaches and public access

  • 29 public beach accesses are maintained by the Town on Estero Island, including Newton Beach Park and Seven Seas Cottage. Many have public parking, and many are ADA-accessible by Mobi-mat or ramp.¹
  • Mobi-mats have been reinstalled at accesses 23, 27 and 31–36, and the Town says the rest are being reinstalled.¹
  • Beach wheelchairs: the Town loans 2 push (non-motorized) beach wheelchairs for up to 7 days. Weekend use needs a reservation at (239) 765-0202 ext. 1502.¹
  • County parks on the island: Bowditch Point Park, Crescent Beach Park, Lynn Hall Pier and Memorial Park, and Matanzas Pass Preserve are run by Lee County Parks & Recreation.¹
